The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) cash-equity market trades in two Japan Standard Time (JST) sessions: 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Japan Exchange Group (JPX), the exchange operator, also accepts orders before each session—from 8:00 a.m. for the morning session and 12:05 p.m. for the afternoon session. Those are not identical concepts: an order can be accepted by the exchange before the relevant auction-trading session begins. JPX Trading Hours page is the controlling source for the timetable.
Key takeaways
- Tokyo Stock Exchange cash equities trade from 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 12:30–3:30 p.m. JST on a normal trading day.
- The midday break is part of the regular schedule. It is not an exchange trading window for cash equities.
- JPX lists order acceptance from 8:00 a.m. before the morning session and from 12:05 p.m. before the afternoon session; a broker can still impose its own submission or processing cutoff.
- Saturdays, Sundays, Japanese national holidays and JPX's listed dates are market closures. Check the current JPX calendar as well as your broker's schedule.
Tokyo Stock Exchange trading hours in JST

JPX calls these periods the morning and afternoon auction-trading sessions for domestic stocks. The timetable below is a cash-equity reference, not a timetable for derivatives, foreign exchange or every broker platform.

| Activity | Start (JST) | End (JST) | What the time means | Primary source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning order acceptance | 8:00 a.m. | 11:30 a.m. | JPX accepts orders for the morning session; acceptance is not the same as an immediate execution. | JPX Trading Hours |
| Morning cash-equity session | 9:00 a.m. | 11:30 a.m. | Regular morning auction-trading session. | JPX Trading Hours |
| Afternoon order acceptance | 12:05 p.m. | 3:30 p.m. | JPX accepts orders ahead of the afternoon session and through its end. | JPX Trading Hours |
| Afternoon cash-equity session | 12:30 p.m. | 3:30 p.m. | Regular afternoon auction-trading session. | JPX Trading Hours |
For an international reader, the cleanest habit is to keep the exchange schedule in JST first. Convert it only after confirming the relevant date: daylight-saving changes in another market can move the local equivalent while the JPX timetable itself remains expressed in Japan time.
The midday break is part of the normal schedule

The cash-equity market pauses between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. JST. That one-hour interval is easy to overlook when a global app presents a single continuous price chart, but it matters for order planning, intraday monitoring and interpreting when an observed price was formed.
Treat the schedule as two sessions, not a six-and-a-half-hour continuous market. An order left with a broker may have platform-specific handling during the break; the exchange rule tells you the JPX session times, not every broker's routing logic, modification deadline or retail interface behavior. Check those broker terms before relying on a same-day action.
The distinction is especially useful when comparing Tokyo with markets that do not use this particular cash-equity lunch break. It is a market-structure fact, not a signal about a stock or an invitation to trade more often.
Order acceptance is not the same as trading

JPX states that orders are accepted from 8:00 a.m. for the morning session and 12:05 p.m. for the afternoon session. The tradable sessions begin later, at 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively. In practice, this gives an investor three separate times to track:
- Your broker's cutoff: the latest time the broker says it can receive, amend or cancel an instruction. This can be earlier than an exchange deadline.
- JPX order acceptance: the time window shown by the exchange for the relevant session.
- The cash-equity session: the period in which the JPX timetable says auction trading is taking place.
Keeping those layers separate avoids a misleading conclusion from an on-screen status. “Accepted” can describe an order's route or exchange acceptance; it does not by itself prove a fill, a final price or a particular execution priority. Holidays and time-zone planning need a second check
JPX says its markets are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and the dates shown on its holiday calendar. For 2026, its calendar records a September 21–23 closure sequence and identifies September 22 as a holiday under Japan's national-holiday rules. The exchange also cautions that holidays can change when national-holiday law changes. Use the dated JPX Market Holidays calendar, rather than an undated third-party market-hours page, for a planned order.

| Planning check | Why it matters | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange day | A normal weekday can still be a JPX holiday. | JPX Market Holidays |
| Cash equities versus derivatives | JPX's domestic-stock schedule does not automatically apply to a derivative or night session. | Product-specific JPX rules |
| Broker cutoff | Broker processing and settlement instructions can have earlier deadlines than the exchange's acceptance window. | Your broker's current customer documentation |
| Corporate-action date | A trading day is not automatically a dividend record date or settlement date. | Issuer notice and exchange calendar |
For those adjacent questions, ATG Press has separate guides to Japan stock settlement, the standard 100-share Japan stock lot, and the September 2026 ex-dividend cutoff. Each answers a different timing question; none replaces the exchange's own current trading calendar.
A practical pre-order checklist
Before relying on Tokyo Stock Exchange trading hours, use this short sequence:
- Confirm that the intended date is a JPX business day on the current official calendar.
- Identify whether you mean domestic cash equities or another JPX product with separate trading rules.
- Write the intended action in JST first, then convert it for your own time zone on that specific date.
- Check your broker's current order-entry, modification and cancellation deadlines.
- Keep corporate-action dates separate from the trading-session clock. For example, an ex-dividend date and the cash-market close answer different questions.
The durable answer to “when does Tokyo trade?” is therefore more useful than a single opening time: normal cash-equity sessions run 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 12:30–3:30 p.m. JST, while JPX order acceptance begins earlier for each session. Confirm the calendar and your broker's rules before treating any one timestamp as actionable.
